Adelaide

The Adelaide

This lovely cocktail is a take on the Gin Sour – minus the egg. It is named after the Holt Roman Empress Adelaide of Italy, not the city in Australia (sorry friends down under, this is a different queen!).

And since this is a history based taverne – below is a little more on the namesake.

Adelaide of Italy lived in the mid to late 900s and was the first to be designated as consors regni, or co-bearer of royalty, to share authority with her second husband Emperor Otto the Great. Her legacy is well known – at least two contemporary accounts of her life were written.

Her first marriage to King Lothair II ended in when he was poisoned by a rival, Berengar. She escaped his forced proposals (and captivity) through a SECRET TUNNEL, after which she sought out the help from Otto to regain her Crown.

After the death of Otto in 973, she successfully guided her son and grandson to the throne as Regent before retiring to a convent before her death in 999.

She regularly donated to the church and established numerous monasteries/churches and was very active in evangelist efforts to convert pagans.

She was canonized in 1097 and remains the patron saint of Abuse victims; brides; empresses; exiles; in-law problems; parenthood; parents of large families; princesses; prisoners; second marriages; step-parents; widows.
